Damien Steven David Brennan was born in Bristol and raised in Leeds. His mother, Mary Brennan, married William Hirst, and when he was one, he was named after him. His stepfather was a mechanic, and his mother worked for the Citizens Advice Bureau. They divorced when he was twelve. He was unruly as a child, and drawing was the only area in which he excelled in his studies. He was impressed by the work of Francis Davison. His academic performance only allowed him to enter high school through the intervention of his art teacher. He studied two A-levels, including one in art, where, obtaining only an E, he was rejected from Leeds College of Art, but managed to gain entry through the two-year diploma course offered by the school. He moved to London where he worked for two years on a construction site to pursue art studies. Rejected from Saint Martins School of Art, he finally entered Goldsmith's, College of Art in 1986 until 1989, to study fine art, one of his main teachers being Michael Craig-Martin. | |
