Jackson Pollock, né le 28 janvier 1912 à Cody dans le Wyoming et mort le 11 août 1956 à Springs dans l'État de New York, est un peintre américain de l'expressionnisme abstrait, mondialement connu de son vivant.

Jackson Pollock a réalisé plus de 700 œuvres, peintures achevées, essais peints ou sculptés et dessins ainsi que quelques gravures.

Il a eu une influence déterminante sur le cours de l'art contemporain.

La pratique du all-over ainsi que le « dripping », qu'il a beaucoup employé de 1947 à 1950, l'a rendu célèbre grâce aux photos et aux films de Hans Namuth, réalisés plus ou moins dans le feu de l'action.

Sa reconnaissance, tardive après toute une vie dans le dénuement, a coïncidé avec l'émergence de New York comme nouvelle capitale mondiale de la culture, peu après la Seconde Guerre mondiale entre 1948 et 1950. Pollock fut le premier de la troisième vague d'artistes abstraits américains à être enfin reconnu, le premier à « briser la glace » (selon l'expression de Willem de Kooning), en ouvrant un passage dans le milieu des collectionneurs aux autres artistes de l'école de New York.

En 1945, Pollock épousa l'artiste peintre Lee Krasner qui a eu une influence décisive sur sa carrière et sur la valorisation de son œuvre.
